Daniel Price Duval

Daniel Price was the former fire chief of Tunitia, Virginia and the son of Warden John Duval, warden of Stonewall Penitentiary.

History

Daniel Duval was born in January 1923 in Tunitia, Virginia--the son of John Duval and a prostitute, Susan Wanefair.  Susan did not want a son, and so John reluctantly took responsibility for the boy.  As a child, Daniel was continually criticized and beaten by his father for being "weak" and the "result of sin."  John had never wanted a son and saw Daniel as little more than God-given responsibility.

Once Daniel turned 18, he moved out and got a job as a firefighter.  Wanting to separate himself from his abusive father, Daniel changed his last name to Price.  Daniel's relationship with his father temporarily grew better ten years later when Daniel became the respected fire chief of the community and settled down with a wife, Kathy (a "good Catholic woman," according to John), and a baby boy, Joey.

In 1959, Daniel was arrested and sentenced for the murder of several young women, a crime he did not commit. Instead of helping his son, John went back to his old ways, viewing Daniel as a disappointment, and locked him up in Stonewall Penitentiary, giving him no special treatment. John, the warden of the facility, began off-the-books experimentations on the patients, including Daniel, and even removed one of Daniel's eyes in the process.

Two months after arriving at the prison, Daniel found a way to escape his cell and camped out in a maze of ventilation ducts, hoping to get to the underground mine beneath the prison in order to find a way to escape and get back to his wife and son.  However, once Daniel made it to the mines, he quickly realized there was no exit and that he would be trapped forever.  He died in the mines, and his remains were not discovered until half a century later.
